Around 5 % of the population suffers from excessive daytime sleepiness and/or hypersomnolence. For those affected it can lead to an irrepressible need to sleep or even to unavoidable ‘sleep attacks’ with undesired sleeping episodes (microsleep). The SPHYNCS study takes a closer look at these disorders. With this in mind, blood samples and samples of cerebrospinal fluid are taken from test subjects at several sleep centres, which must then be transported as quickly as possible to the Inselspital in Bern and to the ETH Zurich. Clinical study SPHYNCS

The Swiss Primary Hypersomnolence and Narcolepsy Cohort Study (SPHYNCS) involves clinical research into sleep disorders and is being conducted under the supervision of the Inselspital Bern. Seven Swiss sleep centres (Barmelweid, Basel, Bern, Lugano, St. Gallen, Zurich and Zurzach) are participating in the study. At the sleep centres blood and if necessary cerebrospinal fluid are collected from the test subjects. The blood sample must be sent as quickly as possible to the Department of Neurology at the Inselspital Bern and the spinal fluid to the Institute for Microbiology at the ETH Zurich. There, the samples are exhaustively analysed with the aim of finding new diagnostic markers enabling improvements in the classification of sleep disorders.

Digital ordering process

The test subjects turn up on an irregular basis at one of the seven sleep centres to have samples taken. Once this process has concluded, the local researcher places an order digitally for a courier. This takes place in the password-protected customer area on the swissconnect website. Any relevant information such as the addresses of the sender and the recipient are already stored there. This simplifies the ordering process for the researchers at the sleep centres. As soon as a shipment order has been digitally registered, the analysis department at the Inselspital Bern and the Institute for Microbiology at the ETH Zürich are notified in advance via email that an urgent shipment is underway. This enables better planning of the follow-up processes for analysis.

Eco-friendly express deliveries

Thanks to the unique transportation system at swissconnect, the samples arrive at their destination quickly, on time and in an eco-friendly manner. If for example a sample has to be sent from the sleep centre in Lugano to the Inselspital Bern, the specially developed logistics software calls up the local bicycle courier service in Lugano. The latter collects the samples and delivers them to a dedicated section at the railway station. At Bern railway station the bicycle courier service is ready and waiting; it unloads the sample from the train and takes it using the fastest route to the Inselspital. The entire shipment process is centrally coordinated and permanently monitored. The ingenious shipment system enables 135 kg in CO2 to be saved during an express delivery from Lugano to Bern as compared to a delivery using a vehicle.
